Oh Nuts!
For as long as I can remember I have been told about the health benefits of nuts. That they are a good source of protein as well as a yummy snack! But the hard part is figuring out what nuts are healthy and how many to eat in one sitting.
One of my favorite kinds of nuts are Pistachios! You may be wondering why these little beauties are so amazing. Well I am here to to give you the facts.
Cholesterol – Pistachios significantly reduced levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol) or Bad Cholesterol.
Fat – One thing that people think is that pistachios are a fatty nut, myself included. The truth is that almost 90% of the fat found in pistachios is the healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats. SO yes they are fatty but the good kind.
Fiber – Pistachios have 3 grams of fiber per serving, which is more than most whole fruit.
Trans Fat – Pistachios are naturally free from trans-fat, which is found mainly in foods cooked with partially-hydrogenated oils such as baked goods including pastries, biscuits, cookies and crackers and fried foods including doughnuts and French fries.
Vitamins & Minerals – Pistachios are an excellent source of copper and manganese, and a good source of phosphorus. They’re also an excellent source of vitamin B6, offering 20% of the Daily Value per serving.
Happy Heart – Did you know that these little beauties can help keep your heart healthy. The are full of good fats, antioxidants and good cholesterol! Why wouldn’t you have a happy heart after eating them!
Nutritional Value – Thanks to their high nutritional value and long storage life, pistachios were an indispensable travel item among early explorers and traders, including travelers across the ancient Silk Road that connected China with the West.
If you are looking for a good snack to keep in your desk at work or to give your kids for school this is definitely the one!
